Welfare pension insurance

Joining National Health Insurance (NHI)

  • Anyone living in Japan must have public medical insurance.
    If you have public medical insurance, even if you get sick, you only have to pay 30% of the medical expenses yourself, and the insurance covers the remaining 70%.
    * 1 Those who do not have public medical insurance must pay 100% of their own medical expenses.
    In Japan, there are roughly two types of health insurance: "health insurance" for workplaces where people who work at companies, etc., and "national health insurance" for other people.
    As a general rule, foreign residents who have a status of residence of more than 3 months must join one of these.

National Health Insurance Coverage

  • If you withdraw from your workplace health insurance, you will be enrolled in the National Health Insurance.
    Please apply for National Health Insurance at the following locations within 14 days from the date of withdrawal.
