Routine preparations for earthquakes are important in Japan due to its many volcanoes and frequent earthquakes.

Routine Preparations

① Take safety measures at home = Reinforce furniture to prevent it from falling over.
② Prepare an emergency bag = Keep food, drinking water, medicine, valuables, and other items (radio, flashlight, lighter, etc.) in one place and ready to take with you in case of an emergency.
③ Have a disaster prevention meeting with your family = Discuss and confirm the evacuation location, course, method, communication methods, etc. with your family in the event of a disaster.
④ Participate in disaster prevention activities = Resident organizations have been formed in the city with the purpose of cooperating with each other in times of disaster. Please actively participate in these sponsored disaster prevention drills and remember disaster prevention actions on a daily basis.

In the Event of an Earthquake

◇Indoors ① First, stay calm and ensure your own safety.
② Take shelter under a table, etc. and protect your head with a cushion.
③ Put out the fire after the shaking has subsided.
④ Open doors and windows to secure an emergency escape.
⑤ Before leaving the house, close the gas main valve and turn off the breaker.
⑥ In buildings, evacuate on foot and do not evacuate in elevators.
⑦ Do not rush outside as there may be falling objects.
⑧ Get the correct information and avoid being misled by false rumors.

If you are outside:
① Take care to avoid falling objects, such as glass and signboards. Carry a minimum of things with you.
② Stay away from block walls or other structures that might fall.
③ If you are in a public area or using public transportation, follow the orders of staff members.
④ If you are driving, pull off to the left side of the road or park in a vacant lot, get out of your car leaving the key inside, and move to a safe place.

When Evacuating

Please check the correct information on TV, radio, etc., and evacuate immediately if there is a risk of your house collapsing. The city has designated 128 schools and other facilities within the city as evacuation shelters, so be sure to check the route to each evacuation center.

A disaster prevention map and hazard map are also posted on the city website.

In order to prevent damage caused by delays in evacuating due to floods, landslides, etc., we use five levels of "warning levels" to help you quickly understand the urgency of evacuation information issued by the city and the actions you should take. Click here for more information.
